The Remote Sensing Company Background
The Remote Sensing Co. was founded by Senior Ecologist Jake Robinson MCIEEM MRSB B.Sc (Hons) Pg.Cert MA + PhD Researcher, and his partner, biologist and data scientist Kate Robinson B.Sc (Hons) M.Sc, who both have a passion for ecology, innovation and design. The Remote Sensing Co. strives to develop the most efficient tools and processes needed to collect data, often in challenging environments, that would otherwise be difficult to acquire and analyse.
In the past, Jake has used remote sensing for a wide variety of projects, including the molecular detection of elusive species, vegetation surveys (Phase 1 and Phase 2 NVC), analysing spatial data using geographical information systems (GIS), and producing 3D models of habitats. Jake’s relevant professional and academic background also includes designing technical survey plans, botanical surveys, analysing bioacoustics data, microbiome studies, eDNA sampling and analysis, building custom UAVs, and using broader graphics and modelling platforms. Jake is a keen supporter of science, research, biodiversity conservation and restoration ecology. Outside of work, his interests are diverse and include venturing into the great outdoors and being surrounded by all things wild! Jake also has a passion for microbiome science and is currently undertaking a PhD in Biodiversity and Public Health. He is investigating nature-based health interventions and the environment-microbiome-health axis.
Kate is a highly trained statistician and data scientist, who has experience of working in consultancy (marine and terrestrial ecology) and academic environments. Kate specialises in bioacoustics data analysis and processing large datasets using a wide range of analytical tools. Kate’s professional background includes working for several ecology consultancies and providing intelligible data insight through complex analyses within the Planning Department of a leading Russell Group University. Outside of work, Kate enjoys baking (she’s actually a multi-award winning baker!), hiking, yoga, reading and travelling.
TRSC Philosophy and Experience
“The Remote Sensing Co. is a young, forward-thinking company”, says Jake. “We strive to be both innovative and relevant, and to provide our clients, in a cost-effective manner, with ecological solutions and remotely-sensed data that would otherwise be difficult, time-consuming and expensive to obtain and analyse. We are a pragmatic and customer-focused company, and enjoy taking on new and interesting challenges.
“Whether you require robust technical survey data, GIS mapping/analysis, or high quality aerial-based 3D models, we are equipped with a range of advanced technologies and skills to achieve this for you.
“We are fully insured to operate Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and hold a remote pilot qualification (RPQ-s) along with the ‘Permission for Commercial Operations’ (PfCO) licence, approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
“Using ‘drones’ we are able to provide our clients with several services from Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) surveys to large-scale modelling”.
The Remote Sensing Co. has extensive experience with GIS, 3D modelling, aerial photography, and graphic design packages.
The Remote Sensing Co. has received eDNA field training from the Freshwater Habitats Trust (FHT), and academic/lab training in genomic technologies such as Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) and next generation sequencing (NGS). This allows them to carry out eDNA surveys and ensures a solid understanding of the molecular processes involved in both the sampling and analytical stages. Jake runs a short eDNA sampling and lab science (lecture) course. This is aimed at ecologists who wish to feel more confident with the methods and theory. “Our remote sensing experience also includes extensive bioacoustics recording and analysis, and we are BOSIET-certified, enabling us to conduct offshore work”.
